UWG Football staff member facing 5 counts of aggravated assault

A now-former student assistant in the University of West Georgia football program is one of five men arrested this week following an exchange of gunfire at a local bar and grill.

According to Carrollton Police Department Public Information Officer, Meredith Browning:

“In the early morning hours of October 17, 2023, officers responded to 1201 Maple Street regarding possible shots fired.  When officers arrived, no one was on scene, but 41 shell casings and bullet fragments were recovered.

Through video surveillance and witness statements, it was discovered a dispute led to the shooting and multiple subjects firing rounds.  It’s been determined some of these rounds struck at least three residences including one on the University of West Georgia campus.  Detectives conducted a search warrant at 333 Foster Street, Apt D-304, Carrollton, which led to the discovery of 5 firearms (one stolen and one illegally modified to be fully automatic), approximately seven ounces of marijuana, and other items used in the illegal distribution of drugs.

The following have been arrested in connection with incident:

Jordan Eric Bynum, age 21, of Conyers – Use of Firearm (machine gun) during Certain Crimes, Aggravated Assault (x 5), Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Reckless Conduct

Jalen Jarod Jackson, age, 23, of Stone Mountain – Aggravated Assault (x5), Reckless Conduct, and Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute

Daniel Lee Davis, age 21, of Decatur – Aggravated Assault (x5), Reckless Conduct, Theft by Receiving Stolen Firearm, Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana

Jerome Marion Glover, age 21, of Carrollton – Aggravated Assault (x5), Reckless Conduct

Jomaurie Rashad Hester, age 23, of Carrollton – Aggravated Assault (x5), Reckless Conduct

Interviews revealed the subjects from the Atlanta area came to Carrollton to stay with friends in anticipation of selling marijuana during UWG’s upcoming homecoming weekend.

This case is active and ongoing with additional arrests possible.  No more information will be released at this time.  Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Carrollton Police Department at 770-834-4451. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via our app and website.”

Hester was a student assistant with the UWG Football team until today- when officials say he was “placed on leave without pay from his assistantship.”

University of West Georgia Executive Director of Communications, Colton Campbell responded to WLBB’s media request Wednesday:

“UWG remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our entire university community. If you have any information on the incident that took place off-campus in the early morning hours of Oct. 17, please contact the Carrollton Police Department at 770-834-4451”
