UWG Establishes Research Corporation to Drive Innovation, Economic Growth

by Colton Campbell

Marking a pivotal step in the University of West Georgia’s commitment to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation and catalyzing economic growth, the institution has established the UWG Research Corporation.

Sponsored research at UWG has been on a remarkable trajectory for the past several years, culminating in last year’s record-breaking achievement of $18.7 million applied for in applications for grants and sponsored projects and $4.5 million received. The UWG Research Corporation will support a deepening of the institution’s scientific, clinical, educational and research activities and endeavors.

UWG President Dr. Brendan Kelly said the creation of the corporation reflects UWG’s dedication to becoming a prominent hub for research, collaboration and entrepreneurial endeavors.

“The creation of the UWG Research Corporation represents a significant milestone in our evolution as an institution at the forefront of advancing knowledge and driving economic growth,” Kelly said. “By nurturing a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, we aim to attract and retain top talent, launch students’ careers before graduation and provide opportunities for our students to engage in research that aligns with the needs of industry.

The UWG Research Corporation will be guided by a board of directors, a group of business and thought leaders who will provide collective expertise to shape the strategic direction of the corporation, forge partnerships with other industry leaders and identify collaborative opportunities to fuel the corporation’s growth in scale and impact.

“The launch of the UWG Research Corporation advances the priorities of our strategic plan, particularly in the areas of relevance and competitiveness, as UWG continues to innovate and advance economic growth and development in the region,” said Dr. Jon Preston, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “This initiative underscores our role as a driving force for positive change in developing new products and processes, and we are thrilled to continue our notable work in advancing the research agenda of our institution.”
