(Update) One Man Killed, Another Seriously Injured In Haralson County Crash

One man is killed and another seriously injured when two vehicles collided on Highway 78 near the intersection of Hurst Mill Road in Haralson County late Monday afternoon.

“A 2002 Nissan Frontier pickup traveling away from Bremen on Highway 78 passed cars on a double yellow no-passing zone at a high rate of speed,” Scott Spence with the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision And Reconstruction Team explained to WLBB Radio. “The vehicle encountered a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban travelling in the opposite direction. The impact was nearly head-on. Both vehicles came to rest pretty much where they hit. The Nissan Frontier came to rest in the roadway and the Chevy Suburban came to rest off the road way on a grass shoulder facing Bremen.

The driver of the Chevy Suburban was fatally injured in the wreck.

“He was restrained by a seat belt but the impact was so significant that he did not survive,” Spence said. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Spence says the driver of the Nissan Frontier was transported to an Atlanta area hospital “in extremely critical condition.”

(UPDATE)

George Handley, age 56 of Bremen, was fatally injured.

The driver of the Frontier, Timothy Raines, age 28 of Dallas, attempted to pass a vehicle on the left hand side over a double yellow line. When doing so, he struck the front of the SUV with the front of his vehicle. The area of impact occurred in the westbound lane of SR8. The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is conducting a follow-up investigation. Charges are pending.
