Looking to preserve the history of their town built along the Georgia Pacific railroad in 1882, the City of Temple will build a history museum.
According to Mayor Michael Johnson, the museum will highlight the founding of the city and the history of the railroad but will also explore the temple model school and the states first school bus.
Johnson said the city saw an opportunity to build a new history museum after the passing of longtime resident, Charles Allen Thomas Sr. Thomas was a beloved figure in Temple and with his passing, his home was for sale and the city made the decision to purchase the house and transform it into a community-shared museum.
As we get ready to put stuff in the museum, we are hopeful that members of the community that have items to contribute, would be willing to contribute. They can loan them to the museum or however they would like to contribute, said Johnson.
The museum will be located in a well-suited place, directly adjacent to Temple High School. Johnson said the city hopes to collaborate with the school to make the museum an environment where young Templetonians can learn about their heritage.
No timeline has been set on the project.
