Fire Hits Local Family-Owned Lumber Company

The property of a multi-generation owned lumber company in Tallapoosa is likely a total loss following an early morning fire on Tuesday. This is according to Haralson County Fire Chief Brian Walker.

C N Owens & Son Lumber on Gordon Street has been in operation since the early 1900Â’s.

“We received a call at 2:14 am in Tallapoosa to Owens Lumber Company for a commercial fire. On arrival we had a building totally involved, probably 1,400 square feet where they built wood pallets inside the building,” said Walker.

“Tallapoosa PD arrived pretty quickly. There was a camper that was starting to be involved and they got a guy that was in this camper out. Then they got another guy that was in the office building.”

Walker said neither of the men sustained injury, but he said the property suffered an estimated $100,000 in damage. He does not believe the business is insured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, however Walker said foul play is not suspected at this time.
