Carroll County man convicted for felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery

On May 20, 2021, a verbal dispute over a card game led to Sherrod Sinteze Montgomery (age 41) striking Ricky Buchanan Cox (age 63).  Per witness reports, Mr. Montgomery struck Mr. Cox with a closed fist that knocked him on his back and onto the floor of the residence located in Bowdon, GA.  Mr. Montgomery then began to kick and stomp on Mr. Cox as he laid helpless on the floor.  Mr. Montgomery fled the scene prior to law enforcement and EMS arrival.  

Mr. Cox was transported to Tanner Medical Center where he died later that night from the injuries inflicted on him by Mr. Montgomery.  Mr. Montgomery was later taken into custody the following morning by Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Aggressive Crime Unit (ACE).  

On January 9, 2023, Mr. Montgomery went to trial charged with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Battery.  The case was tried by Assistant District Attorney Caley McDonald who was assisted by ADA Karli Hightower.  The jury returned a verdict of guilty for felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery on January 13, 2023.  

Mr. Montgomery will be sentenced on February 13, 2023 by Superior Court Judge Dusty Hightower.
