Carroll County BOE Elects New Chair; SchoolsÂ’ ESOL Program Growing & Excelling

The Carroll County Board of Education this week elected District-7 board member Bryant Turner to serve as board chairman for the 2020 calendar by a vote of 4 to 3. Bryant, who represents primarily the Central-cluster of schools was first elected by voters to serve on the board in mid-2018 to replace Jon Anderson who had resigned.

The board on Monday also elected district-5 board member Donald Nixon to serve as vice-chair.

During the BOE monthly work session, the board also received an update on the school districtÂ’s English to Speakers of Other Languages program, where instructors showed that the ESOL population has increased from approximately 240 in school year 16/ 17 to approximately 360 in school year 19/20. The district works with students representing seven countries and ethnicities and speaking seven different languages.

Officials say the most recent stats, which are from school year 2018, show that ESOL students attending Carroll County Schools do better than the state average when it comes to the percentage Progressing Toward English Language Proficiency.

The Mount Zion cluster reportedly has the highest percentage of ESOL student population in the district.
