Authorities Suspect Sunday Night Fire That Burned 100 Acres Was Deliberately Set

Haralson County Fire officials say it took until early this morning to get under control a spur of woods fires reported to authorities around 9:30 Sunday night.

Haralson County Fire Chief Brian Walker said a fire in the woods at Martha Williams Road and Monroe Mill Road (east of Highway 100) burned 100 acres of property. At one point, Walker says, authorities were concerned about a number of houses in the pathway of the fire. Those inside were evacuated to a neighborÂ’s home, which was out of the path.

The evacuated homes were reportedly un-harmed.

Georgia Forestry officials were called in to battle the blaze and responded with four trucks of their own.

Walker says a high wind and low humidity made it difficult to contain the fire, but Forestry officials had it under control by 2:30 Monday morning.

Walker says during this period, four other minor fires were set on Riddlespurgen Road (north of the main fire) and one on Gun Club Road.

Walker says investigators at this time believe all fires were deliberately set.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Haralson County Fire Department or the stateÂ’s toll free arson hotline at 1-800-282-5804.
