“Calendar Girls” Will Take The Stage after Dedicated Women Self Produce

A private group will be raising the curtain for the show “Calendar Girls” this fall. Originally the show was slated to be the Carroll County Community Theater fall production but was cancelled after the City of Carrollton pulled funding from the show due to “implications of nudity.” Now several local ladies have decided to produce the shows privately after receiving a $5,000 budget from two anonymous donors.

One of those ladies and director of the show, Cindi Winstead,  spoke with WLBB radio:

“One of our members Ginna [Blair] approached the mayor asking if he would offer the same reduced rent that they offered the Community Theatre Board; the mayor agreed. We are very appreciative of that and we have reserved the Center for the Arts for August 22-25.”

Meredith Warner a producer on “Calendar Girls” hopes that it’s message will unite the community after the show became mired in controversy due to its cancellation.

“It is all about how a community can lift and empower and support each other. It just became really important for us to feel like that message was being expressed despite the fact that it wasn’t being perceived by people who didn’t know. It is a message that is important for this time,” said Warner.

Proceeds from the show will benefit four cancer related non profits. The group also hopes to produce calendars that feature cancer survivors from the west Georgia area. Tickets are on sale at carrolltonarts.org.
