Whitesburg Ga -- "We are able to provide experiences that no other students are able to have." Those are the sentiments of Dr. Marissa Ogando, Principal of Whitesburg Elementary School, spoke about the donation of the new Opal and Alton McWhorter Music Center. WLBB spoke with the benefactor of this center, Aaron McWhorter, about why he thought this music center was important for the school.

Mr. McWhorter said, "We very much try to be supportive of the Whitesburg community. We always were interested in music and we saw an interesting special about another school system in New Orleans and we thought that it would be great for this school and it's just a nice community to be able to help."

On Thursday afternoon the school held a dedication for the new center that hosted many local and state officials, including Governor Nathan Deal.

"It is very unlikely that a local school system or a local school would be able to find the money that it takes to buy these instruments out of their own budget. The generosity of people like Aaron and Linda McWhorter makes these things possible and thats the kind of generosity and philanthropy that makes our state great and I hope this example will be duplicated in many other schools around Georgia," said Deal.

McWhorter suggested naming the center after his parents who were both teachers; and he felt that this music center would honor them.
