State Asking County To Expand/ Improve Local DFACS Facility

The State Properties Commission is looking to update and expand the Department Of Family And Children Services facility located on Independence Drive in Carrollton. The building was built in 1989 by Carroll County and is leased to the State Of Georgia.

The state is offering to sign a new 15-year lease if the county will cover the 3.5 million dollars price tag estimated to expand the building by over 7-thousand square feet and reconfigure office space to meet state standards.

Carroll County's Operations Director Gerald Pilgrim will present the offer to county commissioners for approval.

"They have gone from forty-five employees a year and a half ago to over ninety employees who are employees at that facility," Pilgrim told WLBB Radio this week. "So unfortunately...it is growing, the need is there. They have outgrown their current space. They have proposed a need for about 7,000 additional square feet to the current site-- which is about 19,000 square feet. They need some offices reconfigured and some additional security in the building."

State officials suggest that the county will see their investment returned through the 15-year lease on the improved property, stating the lease "will amortize the investment plus future capital cost and maintenance expense for the county."
