City Council Approves new Assistant DA

Carrollton Ga -- It was a close vote this week, but the majority of Carrolton's City Council approved a plan for the city to fund an additional assistant district attorney for the Coweta District, who they believe will put great focus on prosecuting violent and gang related crimes in the area.

District Attorney Pete Skandalakis admits that asking the city to fund a new assistant district attorney, is a novel approach.

"We have reached the point where we need assistance. The argument that is always made is that it is the responsibility of the county to fund the DA's office and that is a legitimate argument. But it is also a team operation, a team effort and 26 % of our case load is made by the city of Carrollton. It is usually the largest provider of case loads in the DA's office. So that's why I have come to the cities to help."

Skandalakis works with 26 different police agencies as a part of the Coweta Judicial Circuit which includes Carroll, Coweta, Heard, Meriwether and Troup counties. He said it is one of the largest circuits in the state.

The city of LaGrange has funded an additional assistant district attorney in response to addressing gang related shootings.
