Rise in Carroll County Unemployment Rate

Carrol County Ga -- Carroll County's unemployment rate went up five-tenths of a percentage point in June.

Labor commissioner Mark Butler sees that number rising because more people enter the workforce in the summer time.

"The big driver behind that half a point increase in the unemployment rate had to do with over 400 individuals entering the workforce for the first time. These are your high school and college graduates who are out there looking for their first job and until they found that first job, they are going to count as unemployed," says Butler.

A slight increase in the number of unemployment claims were filed in Carroll County for June compared  to May according to the latest employment statistics released by the Georgia Department of Labor on Thursday.

Despite the 30 additional claims in June, Butler says claims are down 17% from this time in 2016.
