WGTC Sports Update For Wednesday 02/22/17

Late Rally Lifts WGTC over LaGrange
Carrollton, GA –Behind a six-run 8th inning, the Golden Knights overcame the LaGrange College JV squad 11-8 here Monday.West Georgia Tech (6-6) found themselves trailing 7-1 heading into the bottom of the 5th. The home team plated three runs that inning, cutting the LaGrange lead to 7-4.Both teams added another run and the Panthers took an 8-5 lead into the 8th prior to the rally. Kenny Bailey (So., Bishop-Oconee Co.) pitched a scoreless 8th to notch his first win while Connor Wilson (So., Newnan-Northgate) slammed the door for his first save.
The win capped off a busy week for the WGTC baseball squad. The Golden Knights split a doubleheader Feb. 17 against Central Alabama Community College, dropping Game 1 by a 7-1 margin before rebounding with a 4-2 win in Game 2.  Staying on the road Feb. 19, WGTC dropped an 11-1 decision to Chattahoochee Valley Community College before picking up the home win over LaGrange.
The Golden Knights return to action this weekend. Wallace Community College-Dothan and St. Louis Community College visit Carrollton for games Friday and Saturday. First pitch is with WCC-Dothan is set for 3 p.m. Friday, followed by the match-up with St. Louis. The teams will square-off again Saturday with St. Louis at 3 p.m. followed by WCC-Dothan. Home games are played at Central High School.
Softball Season is Underway
The weather continues to play havoc with the WGTC softball team.Rain forced Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader with Gordon College to Sunday. The Golden Knights dropped a tight 3-2 contest in the opener and then fell 8-0 in the nightcap. On Tuesday, WGTC squared off with Georgia Military College.  GMC took Game 1 by a 7-0 score while Game 2 was washed out.
The Golden Knights (0-3) will be looking for that first win March 1 when they host Chattahoochee Valley in a 4 p.m.doubleheader at Central High.
Basketball Looks Forward to the Postseason
The WGTC men’s basketball team dropped its regular season finale at Emory-Oxford Saturday 99-85.  The Golden Knights finish the regular season 13-13, 3-1 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) play.  As regular season champions, Coach NikiOkolovitch’s squad earned an automatic berth in the GCAA Tournament Championship this upcoming Sunday, Feb. 26, against the winner of Southern Crescent and Emory-Oxford. Tip at Emory-Oxford is still to be determined.
The WGTC women’s team has advanced to the NJCAA District Tournament and return to action March 4.
