Spring Sports Underway at WGTC

Even though the calendar says February, spring has sprung at West Georgia Technical College (WGTC).
The Golden Knights baseball squad has opened 4-4 on the season. Interim Head Coach Beau Welborn takes over for Todd Pratt, who resigned in December to accept a position with the Miami Marlins organization. Freshman Tony Matos (Hoschton – Winder Barrow) has paced the offense early. In 7 games, the shortstop is hitting .346 including a double, 2 triples, and 6 RBI. He has scored a team-leading 9 runs.
After a season opening doubleheader with Southern Union was washed out last week, the Golden Knights softball team hopes to open its season Saturday with a 1:00 doubleheader at Gordon.  Under the direction of Coach Monica Mills, the home-opener is slated for Tuesday, February 21 with a two-game set against Georgia Military College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 at Central High School.
The WGTC Ladies basketball squad concluded its regular season with a 61-42 road victory over the Huntingdon College JV team. The Golden Knights (7-16) were led by Anna Watkins’ (Fairburn – Creekside) 31 points.  Coach Alford Williams’ team has a couple of weeks to prepare for the NJCAA Region 20 winner. That game will be March 4 on campus at Emory-Oxford.
The Men’s basketball team fell to NJCAA Division I ranked Marion Military Institute at home Monday night 76-45.  The Golden Knights close the regular season this Saturday at Emory-Oxford. Tip is set for 4:00. Under the direction of Niki Okolovitch, the Golden Knights (13-12, 3-0) are the regular season Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division III Champions. They receive an automatic berth in the GCAA Tournament Championship on February 26 hosted by Emory-Oxford.
