Three People Killed In Mid-Air Plane Collision

Local authorities say three people are dead following a mid-air collision involving two small planes. The collision happened several feet from one of the runways in a field at the West Georgia Regional Airport.

Carroll County Fire Chief Scott Blue says 911 received a call at approximately 10:54 Wednesday morning. “The call came from the airport reporting an aircraft crash. Our units out of the Mt. Zion station were the first ones to respond. Upon arrival they learned there were two aircraft involved,” Blue said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “At this time, the incident is still under investigation by the FAA, the Carroll County Coroner’s Office and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

Both planes involved were single engine.

“One was a BeechCraft Bonanza out of College Park. The other was a Diamond DA-20 out of Newnan. There was one fatality in the Beechcraft and two in the Diamond. They were the only occupants, ”he said. “Two witnesses saw the aircraft collide in mid-air. Both planes appeared to be in a landing pattern. This happened south of runway 35.”

The Diamond plane is registered to Falcon Aviation Academy out of Newnan.

West GA Regional is a non-towered airport.
