Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force/ Local Officers Stop Predator

Police say a 62-year old Virginia man who drove south around 8 hours this week to meet who he thought would be an underage girl, is now behind bars.

Bremen Police Chief Keith Pesnell says a Bremen officer posing as a 15-year old female online, had communicated with the suspect over the Internet since September of last year.

“Our investigator went undercover, basically posing as an underage girl on different websites,” Pesnell told WLBB Radio. “The suspects in these cases— they have to be the aggressor. We are trained in what to say so as to not entrap or anything of that nature. Then it leads to them asking to come and meet.”

Pesnell believes Stan Godsey of Gate City, Virginia drove all the way to Bremen with the intent of having sex with an underage girl. He was greeted by law enforcement instead.

“Unfortunately, that’s what we are having to deal with now. Predators— trying to get to our children through the Internet. We are going to do everything we can to make sure that doesn’t happen and to let them know they don’t come to Bremen,” Pesnell said. “Our officers are doing a great job, its just… when we catch one we just have to wonder how many are out there that are succeeding. We just have to stay on top of it.”

Pesnell says Godsey was arrested after he had rented a motel room and drove to the designated spot arranged with the undercover officer. The suspect was allegedly in possession of prophylactics and sex toys.
