Villa Rica Mayor Collins Resigns To Run For Ga. House

Villa Rica Mayor Jay Collins resigned today stating he plans to run for the Georgia General Assembly. Mayor Collins issued his resignation effective midnight tonight during a 3:00 pm press conference held at Villa Rica City Hall. he Mayor said his resignation comes on the heels of his plans to qualify on Thursday as a candidate in the May 24, 2016 primary due to the withdrawal of incumbent State Representative Dusty Hightower in State House District 68.

The Georgia Republican Party earlier today stated it will reopen qualifying for the Republican Primary for State House District 68 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The post became vacant when Gov. Nathan Deal last week announced he had appointed Rep. Hightower of Carrollton to serve as Superior Court judge in the Coweta Judicial Circuit Court.

According to Georgia Law, specifically Article II, Section 2, Paragraph V of the 1983 Constitution of Georgia, "The office of any state, county, or municipal elected official shall be declared vacant upon such elected official qualifying, in a general primary or general election, or special primary or special election, for another state, county, or municipal elective office or qualifying for the House of Representatives or the Senate of the United States if the term of the office for which such official is qualifying for begins more than 30 days prior to the expiration of such official's present term of office."

"We are VR" has become the mantra of the City of Gold since Jay Collins was first elected Mayor in November 2003. One of his goals was to bring a sense of pride and cohesion to the city, and he's been very successful.

Mayor Pro-Tem Mike Williamson will serve as interim Mayor until a new mayor is elected during the November 8, 2016 General Election. Mayor Pro-Tem Williamson, who is recuperating after knee surgery and therefore unable to attend Wednesday's press conference, said "Mayor Collins has worked hard to best represent the voice of Villa Ricans, to connect with each of them as often as possible. I congratulate him and wish him the best in his new endeavor and know he will bring that same level of in-touch service to State House District 68 as your state representative."
