Man Wielding Ax In Critical Condition After Shot By Deputy

Carroll County, GA -- An early morning 911-call with someone reporting a man outside his Center Point area home wielding an ax, leads to a sheriff’s deputy shooting the man in apparent self-defense.
Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brad Robinson says the shooting victim is in critical condition in an Atlanta hospital.
“The 911 call came in about 5:10 this morning from a caller on Levans Road who said there was a white male carrying an ax outside of his residence, pacing back and forth and screaming. At one point the suspect had broken one of the windows inside the caller’s home,” Robinson told WLBB Radio Friday. “As the deputy was pulling in the driveway, the suspect ran—and its very obvious that he had an ax on his shoulder. He went behind the residence—its still dark at this time. The suspect began to swing the ax at the deputy. The deputy fired and hit the suspect in the chest area.”
Investigators are holding back on releasing names of those involved at this point until all relatives are notified.
“Deputies respond to calls of similar nature frequently but you just never know what’s going to happen when you turn the corner when you are chasing a suspect,” Robinson said. “This particular time the suspect had an ax and was swinging at the deputy. It’s very fortunate that the deputy is okay.”
Robinson says he does not believe that the homeowner and the man with ax knew each other.
“The suspect did in fact wreck his car a short distance from where this residence is,” he said.
Drug and alcohol testing will be performed on the suspect.
The sheriff’s office is in the process of taking criminal charges against the suspect for assaulting the deputy sheriff. Investigators say he does have a previous criminal history.
It is protocol for GBI to be called to look into any officer involved shooting.
