Student Arrested This Afternoon After Gun Found In His Bag At School

Police say gun was not loaded and was likely not in working condition
A 17-year old Villa Rica High School student is in police custody this afternoon after school officials found a .22 caliber hand gun in his backpack.

According to VRPD Captain Keith Shaddix, the student left his bag in a counselor’s office. Staff found the bag and discovered the weapon. They notified the school resource officer, who made the arrest.
The student faces a felony charge of having a weapon on school property.
“The gun was a little semi-automatic and one of our officers says it had a broken part and was probably inoperable,” Shaddix said. “But that doesn’t matter. They have no reason to bring guns to school. They know better.”
