Law enforcement officers in Polk County are searching for the driver of a vehicle that left the scene of a fatal crash this morning that killed a child and seriously injured another.  The crash occurred around 7:05 a.m. on Tallapoosa Highway near Sewell Creek Road south of Cedartown.  The Georgia State Patrol is asking for assistance in locating Robert Nelson Wood, age 42, from Tallapoosa (photo attached).
Troopers investigating the one-vehicle crash believe Wood was driving a 2009 Pontiac G6 and was traveling southbound on Tallapoosa Highway (Georgia Highway 100) when the vehicle left the west edge of the roadway, struck a ditch with its front, and then rolled over onto its top.  A witness told troopers that the driver fled the scene on foot after getting the small children out of the vehicle.
Six-year-old Trent Brooks and five-year-old Gabriel Brooks (female), both from Tallapoosa, were initially taken to Floyd Medical Center and later flown to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital in Chattanooga.  Trent Brooks passed away at the hospital and Gabriel Brooks has serious injuries.
A GSP helicopter is assisting in the search.  Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Robert Nelson Wood is asked to call the Polk County Sheriff's Office or the Georgia State Patrol.
