WEST GEORGIA TECH LANDS SIX ON GCAA CONFERENCE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FIRST AND SECOND TEAMS

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Randazerro Chaney from the men’s team and Sharika Pennemon and Sharon Forte’ from the women’s team were all named to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Division III First Team All-Conference squads after voting by league coaches on Sunday.

Alyja Hennings and Victor Wynn were named to the All-GCAA Second Team on the men’s side. Victoria Conner received All-GCAA Second Team honors on the women’s side.

Middle Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Brown was named GCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year and Georgia Northwestern head coach Jimmy Williams received the Women’s Coach of the Year Award.

Chaney, a sophomore point guard from LaGrange, ranked in the top four in the conference in four major statistical categories: points per game (14.3), rebounds per game (6.0), assists per game (4.5) and steals per game (2.6).

Hennings is a freshman shooting guard from Alpharetta who became the top newcomer of the WGTC men’s squad. He finished the season ranked in the top five in the conference in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.8 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Wynn, a Columbus native, averaged 10.6 points per game and led the conference in three point field goal percentage (45.2 percent) for the second year in a row. His three point field goal percentage also ranked in the top-10 nationally.

“I don't think you can find any more deserving kids for these teams,” said WGTC head coach Niki Okolovitch. “Chaney has been the heart of this team for two years, and gives it all he has every time he steps on the court. Vic (Wynn) is a kid who falls under the radar sometimes, so I'm excited the coaches recognized him.  Alyja has had a monster second half of the season, and has probably been the region’s best player over that stretch.”

Pennamon came to West Georgia Tech by way of Jasper County High school in Monticello, Ga. The freshman averaged 14.4 points per game (2nd in conference), 5.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game (1st in conference) while shooting 37.6 percent from the field (3rd in conference). She received GCAA Player of the Week honors a school-record three times over the course of the season.

Forte is a Henry County native who averaged 12.7 points per game (3rd in conference) and 4.4 rebounds per game while shooting 35.7 percent from the field (6th in conference). Her season high in scoring was a 26 point effort against nationally-ranked Gadsden State.

Conner, a freshman from Paulding County, averaged 11.7 points per game (5th in conference) and 6.3 rebounds per game (7th in conference) while shooting a league-best 51.1 percent from the field.

“I am very excited and honored that these three young ladies received the honors,” WGTC head women’s basketball coach Kenny Edwards said. “I believe all three are very deserving. Sharika has been a leader on both sides of the ball this year for us. She brings her game and gives effort every time she steps onto the court. Sha'Ron has been a tremendous asset to our program this year. She has been very consistent all year with her best games versus the best teams. Victoria has played a pivotal part in our run in the second half of the season and in our team’s march to the to the conference tournament. I believe we have a team full of very deserving players but I am very pleased to see that coaches of the conference recognized these three ladies.”

Both squads have completed regular season play and are preparing for the GCAA / Region 17 Division III Tournament, which will be held at Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robins on February 22-24. The men tip off on Friday as the No. 4 seed versus No. 5 Georgia Northwestern. The WGTC women are seeded No. 2 and will play at noon on Saturday against No. 3 Middle Georgia Tech.
