Senator Re-Introduces "Hunting-Silencer" Legislation

Georgia State District 31 Senator, Bill Heath is sponsoring a bill that would allow hunters to use gun silencers.

“It is all about protecting your hearing,” Heath said Monday. “Some people think that bullets whisper—but most bullets travel at supersonic speeds. They have a sonic boom. And there is nothing you can do to get rid of that. But this (a silencer) does suppress some of the sounds from the firearm.”

A similar proposal backed by the National Rifle Association found strong support in the Senate last year but did not make it through the House.

“Just because the House didn’t pass it last year doesn’t mean we quit trying,” Heath said. “So, I reintroduced it and hopefully we’ll send it back to them.”

Senate Bill 93 would also penalize anyone who hunts with a silencer illegally — such as without a landowner’s permission.

Silencers are legal in Georgia, but the law currently prohibits their use for hunting.
