Westmoreland Considers The Senate?
With Saxby Chambliss announcing Friday that he will not run for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2014, does that vacancy interest District-3 house Rep Lynn Westmoreland?
“We are certainly thinking about it—my wife—trying to pray about it as a family,” Westmoreland told WLBB on Saturday. “Sure. It’s not often that you have an open Senate seat, so—I think anyone telling you that they are not looking at it may not be telling you the truth.”
Would 2014 candidacies from other well-known Georgia Republicans rumored to be interested in the vacancy, affect Westmoreland’s decision to run or not?
“I’m not going to let anyone else’s decision affect my decision, because if I do it, I’m going to be in to win—and I’m sure that if they get in the race, they are in to win” he says. “Of course, that’s going to make the playing field different with the amount of money that has to be raised… the fact that the PAC community—even the people here in the state… we all have the same supporters.”
Westmoreland has served a Georgia district in the U.S. House since 2005.
