Among the new legislation that will go into effect in the state of Georgia on January 1st, 2013 is house-bill 1176; a comprehensive sentencing and corrections reform bill that intends to strengthen penalties for violent and career criminals, while providing more effective punishments for low-level drug users and property offenders.
District 68 House Representative Dusty Hightower says the measure is similar to other states that are easing up on non-violent offenders and focusing further on career criminals and violent offenders as a means to curb the states cost for incarceration.
This legislation also expands the mandatory reporting of child abuse to include anyone who has reasonable cause to believe that abuse is occurring and eliminates the statute of limitations for sex crimes committed on a child younger than 16.
