School Program Helping Working Teens Could Be Cut
Among the considerations of cuts to the Carroll County School system 2012/2013 budget is the Open Campus High School. The program currently benefits up to 130 students. “This is our night high school for students who… for various reasons, may have to work during the day to support their family,” says Schools Chief Financial Officer, Greg Denney. “This (program) gives them the opportunity to attend school at night, still get their diploma. Without the program, these students are not going to have the opportunity to get a high school degree and obviously that a negative consequence of these budget reductions.” Denney notes that should the program be eliminated for next year, it would be one of the cuts considered for return when the economy and funding bounces back.
County schools officials estimate a $9M reduction in next year’s budget from the current. According to the Carroll County schools website, cutting the Open Campus program could save approximately $263,000.
Denney was on yesterday’s WLBB ‘Community Voice.’ That show is available in pod cast on this station’s website.
