Sunday package alcohol sales in Carrollton appears unlikely anytime soon as both city council and mayor say they have heard little interest from constituents. Councilman Gerald Byrd says he would find it difficult to bring the idea before Carrollton voters on a ballot in 2012. “I’d have to weigh the pros and cons—maybe listen to some really, good, strong arguments, but right now, I don’t think I will. It just doesn’t sound right,” he says. “It seems that we (society) are straying further and further away from religion and it seems that Sunday is not as sacred as it used to be… because I remember in Carrollton when everything shut down on Sunday and if you didn’t get it Saturday, you just didn’t get it. Sunday’s the one last thing we need to hold onto and keep that time sacred.”
Council member Mike Patterson says he would need to discuss the issue more before offering a decision at this time.
Newly elected councilman Jim Waters says while he will not likely bring the measure before council, he would approve passing the decision on to Carrollton voters.
Mayor Wayne Garner is quoted as saying “We’re not opposed to doing that, we’ve just sort of waited to see if anybody asked us to.”
Councilwoman Mandy Maierhofer could not be reached for comment.
As far as Carroll County, Commission Chairman Bill Chappell says he personally would not likely bring the idea before the commission, but if the choice were handed over to voters, he would hope to place it on the November general election ballot “because of the traditionally larger voter turn-out during presidential elections.”
