The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is advising of the return of an old driveway-improvement scam they believe targets the elderly after a Carrollton area woman is victimized this week. Captain Jeff Richards says the public can help by identifying a vehicle used by the three white males allegedly involved.
“The suspects in this case likely identified this driveway in need of repair,” says Richards. “In similar cases, the suspects offer to do the work for less than what it would normally cost.”
Richards says in the case reported Wednesday, the suspects gave a quote of $2,000 to the local 87-year old. “When they finished the job they presented her with a $4,000 bill and she issued them a check,” he says.”
Richards adds that in most of these cases, the work performed is sub-standard. He says, “We’ve had cases in the past where grass would literally grow through what was claimed to be asphalt, within two or three days.”
The vehicle used by the suspects is described as a white ford pick up truck with a large drum that had a spray apparatus attached at the time of the incident.
“We are working diligently to find these people and try to get this lady’s money back to her,” Richards says. “But, people should be very aware of these type of scams… especially this time of year.
