Local Vets Taking Interest In New VA Clinic

Approximately 125 area residents with interest in veterans issues filled up the Carroll County Commission chambers Monday, part of a League of Women Voters of Carrollton-Carroll County sponsored forum. The topic seeming to carry the most interest—the future Trinka Davis Veterans Village in Carrollton-- was addressed by Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the VA Clinic in Atlanta, Robin Brown. She says about 1,000 veterans will be able to be seen at the Carrollton clinic and that priority will be given to those with area zip codes.

Brown encourages area residents to make plans to volunteer their time at the new clinic. “We are definitely looking for volunteers in the community to help out so it would be great if we had volunteers to come by to read to read to our veterans and provide company… and those comfort items… like, nail-polish and those things they may not have access to because they don’t get to go to Dollar General anymore (chuckles),” she says. “So if you’re out shopping and you think you might want to buy something for the veterans, think of the women… and think of the toiletry items that you like and just buy an extra one.”

Brown advises veterans interested in transferring to the Carrollton facility to apply now through their current VA physician. The Trinka Davis Veterans Village includes a 42-bed skilled nursing home and will have a clinic for dental, visual, mental health, podiatry and pharmacy. The village is due to open by early summer 2012.
