The League of Women Voters of Carrollton and Carroll County is sponsoring a panel of speakers on the topic of Veterans, including: what is being done for Veterans, what can be done for Veterans and what we, as members of the community, can do for veterans.
This event will be held at the Carroll County Commission Chambers auditorium on College Street in Carrollton on Monday evening, November 28th at 7 pm. The public is invited to attend.
Robin Brown, Public Affairs Specialist & Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the VA Medical Center in Atlanta, will update the audience on the progress of the the Trinka Davis Veterans Village which is scheduled to open in June, 2012, on Bankhead Highway in Carrollton. Not only does Brown plan, develop and execute strategies to convey information about the Veterans Health Administration, she also manages the Medical Center's news magazine and stakeholder relations. She is an Army veteran with 21 years of service, retiring in 2005 as Master Sergeant.
Gerald Sailors, a Veteran Marine from Bremen, GA, will speak about local services and give additional information on the new facility. Sailors is a Service Officer in the American Legion, Post 143, and a Methodist minister.
Paulette Norvel Lewis, of Atlanta, has special expertise in programs for women veterans returning from military service into the workforce and will be speaking on this particular topic. She is the District Four Regional Administrator of the Women's Bureau of the U.S. Department of Labor. She is responsible for the eight southeastern states, including Georgia, where she promotes policies to improve salaries, working conditions and quality of jobs for working women.
Also speaking on the panel is Claudine Noel, a veteran who serves as a Workforce Development Specialist for the United States Department of Labor, Employee and Training Administration, and Victoria Hilliard, also a veteran, who works for the Georgia Department of Labor, where she is a Program Specialist with the Disabled Veterans Outreach.
This panel of speakers will address questions from the audience.
This program has been arranged for the League by Nellie Duke, former president of the American Legion Post 143 Ladies Auxillary. Duke currently serves as the chairperson of the Georgia Commission on Women.
The panel is the product of the League’s most recent Program Item of Interest which is, “Inform ourselves about critical issues facing military service personnel, veterans, and their families, and actively support then locally. Educate our community on grassroots efforts to address and solve problems that infringe on military voting rights.” According to president. Robin Collins, “We recognize that much of the population is insulated from issues facing the men and women who serve our country. We want to learn and, in turn, help where we may be able, particularly in active duty service personnel’s access to timely voting processes.”
Collins continues, “In addition to being an advocate for voters, the League of Women Voters, takes an active interest in issues that face our community. The membership votes on particular topics of interest to study and then invites speakers to address those topics. At some point we may choose to make a consensus statement on a particular issue, but only after careful study.” To learn more about the LWV C-CC, email: Carrollton@lwvga.org or go to www.lwvga.org/carrollton or find them on Facebook at League of Women Voters of Carrollton and Carroll County.
