Schools Recognizing Veterans Day; Cermonies Planned



--The Villa Rica High School Fine Arts Department invites you to help us salute our veterans on Thursday, November 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the Mill Amphitheatre in downtown Villa Rica.  This is a presentation showcasing the Villa Rica High School Chorus, the Villa Rica High School Brass Ensemble, the Bay Springs Middle School Chorus, the Villa Rica High School ROTC, and the Villa Rica High School Theatre.  Guest speakers will include General Charles Wilhelm, Retired Four-Star Marine Corp General, and Cindy Hardegree, National Board Member of Gold Star Mothers.  Be sure to bring your lawn chairs!

 
--On Veteran’s Day, the University of West Georgia will participate in Remembrance Day National Roll Call, a nationwide effort to honor the American troops who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan during the past decade.

On Friday, Nov. 11, volunteers will read the names of more than 6,300 service men and women who have died in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, now called Operation New Dawn.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the school fountain, near the UCC building. The roll call will begin at about 9:30 a.m. At 2 p.m. – or 11 a.m. Pacific Time -- there will be a nationwide moment of silence. In 1918, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marked the temporary cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I.

 --Friday, November 11, Villa Rica Elementary will host a reception for our military veterans at 1:00.  The school will hold an assembly at 1:30 to recognize all veterans in celebration of Veterans' Day.  All community members, media, and county school personnel are invited to attend.

 --Mount Zion High School will commemorate Veteran’s Day with a special Assembly on Friday, November 11, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. in the Mt. Zion High School Gymnasium at 280 Eureka Church Road, Carrollton, GA.   The program is open to the community.  All Veterans and their guests are welcome to attend and are encouraged to wear their uniform if possible.  We will formally recognize those previous and present members of the armed forces during the program.  For additional information contact Sonya Shelton, Program Coordinator, 770-834-6654.

--Students’ grades three thru five at Bowdon Elementary School are inviting all those who have loved and served in any of the branches of the military to attend our day of gratitude and celebration on Friday, November 11, 2011.  The Veteran’s Day celebration will begin with a welcome reception at 8:30 AM in the Media Center followed by a program in the school gymnasium at 9 AM.
