Election 2011: Tight Races In Carollton

Carroll County Elections Superintendent Becky Deese says polling staff expected turnout for Tuesday’s Municipal Elections to be very light. But, she says, she is “very pleased” with the number of voters to come out yesterday. She says, “Early voting had a slow start but picked up and it looks like about 12-percent of eligible voters did so in Carroll County.”
Deese adds, “We had some very close races and it will be interesting to see the certified returns that come in Monday after we count the provisional ballots.”

Until those provisional ballots are counted, incumbent Carrollton mayor Wayne Garner has 16 more votes than his challenger. Walt Hollingsworth says he will likely request a recount of votes next week.

Another close race in Carrollton is for city council ward four where incumbent Mandy Maierhofer has 5 more votes than challenger Charles Lane.
There will be a new councilman representing ward-3 after Jim Watters defeats Dr. Peter Balega by a 22% margin.

The other contested race in Carrollton was for the city school board, at-large position. Incumbent Mike Rothschild defeats Earl Phillips by 33% of the vote.
