D.14 Hopeful Visits Haralson

Georgia’s District 9 Congressman-- who hopes to be the state’s first U.S Representative of the newly formed District 14, introduced himself to Haralson County business leaders during stops in Buchanan and Tallapoosa Monday. Tom Graves says Haralson County is not so different from where he grew up in the small town of White. “The small-town values is sort of how I came up and what was instilled in me is we have to dream big, work hard and we can achieve much,” he says. “…And that’s what I sense here in Haralson County, or all the counties in this new Congressional district.”

Graves was elected to serve GA district 9 in June of 2010, to fill the seat vacated by now-Governor Nathan Deal.

The new District 14 contains twelve counties including Haralson, Paulding and Floyd. Each of those three are currently in District 11, represented by Congressman Phil Gingrey. “(Gingrey is) a great Congressman and somebody I certainly look up to and Phil’s certainly well liked in this district, the current eleventh,” says Graves. “For us to have his support and his endorsement of our re-election, means a lot to us.”

One name to have popped up to challenge Graves in the 2012 election, is that of former Georgia Congressman and 2008 Libertarian Presidential candidate, Bob Barr. Back in October, Barr spokesman Bill Crane told the Associated Press that they were “gauging support” before announcing whether or not to challenge Graves in the new 14th. Crane could not be reached for additional comment Monday.
