Carrollton Police encourage area residents to bring in their expired and un-used medications to the Carrollton Police station between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm this Saturday. Sgt. Matt Howard says, “As part of the DEA’s red ribbon week, this drug-take-back event helps prevent ignored medications from potentially getting into the wrong hands.”
Meanwhile, Carrollton Police Captain Chris Dobbs says he is keeping an eye on what could be a disturbing new trend by local prescription drug abusers. Dobbs says in recent weeks he has become concerned that medication abusers are filing false police reports claiming their medications have been stolen, in order to be allowed to obtain a new prescription from their doctor, before the current prescription time runs out. He says, “We have reports where only a bottle of meds are stolen from a room that included other high value property.” He says, “That is suspicious but there are plenty of situations where these claims are legit, I have no doubt.”
Dobbs believes the false reports lead to the abuser pocketing the additional drugs for personal use or the prescriptions are re-sold on the street to someone not prescribed.
