A local marine dies last week in Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations in the Helmand providence, according to military officials. 21-year old Lance Corporal Scott D. Harper of Winston was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th marine regiment, 2nd marine division, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Harper is a 2008 graduate of Alexander High School.
A moment of silence was observed for Harper before the start of Friday night's football game between rivals Alexander and Chapel Hill High schools.
