For some area youth, participation in the Carroll County Mentor Program could make the difference between academic success and lawlessness, according to mentor program member, Derrick Newton. He says the local program helps keep kids in need of a little extra attention, on the right track.
“A mentor is a wise and trusted friend. Some of us meet in school… some meet in and out of school. We really focus on being a consistent, positive and reliable role-model,” he says.“ We work on little things like talk about academic and life goals… to other things, like… I’ll go to their football games just for support… They may come with me to a volunteering function. We may go putt golf balls, you know. Just being there means the world to these kids.”
Newton says the local program is always looking for additional volunteers.
The mentor program’s lone annual fund-raiser is Friday, and it’s a golf outing at the Oak Mountain course. He says sponsorships and slots are still available for those interested in participating, and encourages them to contact the Oak Mountain Championship Golf Course.
