Ellenberg, Yancey named to preseason all-conference team
Carrollton, GA – The West Georgia Wolves are hoping to be the surprise team in the 2012 Gulf South Conference softball race. UWG was picked seventh in the GSC’s annual poll of league head coaches, released Tuesday by the league office in Birmingham.
West Georgia received one for fifth place vote in the balloting. Four coaches tabbed the Wolves for sixth, while the remaining vote was for seventh. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.
The Wolves’ drive to climb in the league standings this spring will be led by two members of the preseason All-GSC Team. Second baseman Lindsey Ellenberg and sophomore third baseman Nicole Yancey were named to the squad by league coaches.
Ellenberg is no stranger to conference honors. The senior from Lawrenceville has been named either first-or-second team All-GSC three consecutive seasons. She has a career batting average of .309, and ranks among the all-time leaders in many categories in the UWG records book.
Yancey, a sophomore from Whitesburg, made a huge impact for the Wolves a year ago. She has 14 home runs, the second highest single season total ever at UWG. An All-GSC First Team choice in 2011, Yancey also batted .371 and had a school record on-base percentage of .527
Preseason practice is currently underway for new coach Mandy Harris and her team. The Wolves’ 2012 season opener is a February 6 double header at Albany State.
