Utica, N.Y. – Basketball in March always seems to include that “Cinderella Story,” and the West Georgia Technical College Women’s Basketball team hopes that midnight does not strike for a couple of days.
The Golden Knights arrived in Utica, N.Y., Wednesday to prepare for Thursday’s opener in the NJCAA Division 3 Women’s Basketball Championship. They are among the top eight teams in the country vying for the coveted crown.
Just arriving in Utica is a victory in itself. A major snowstorm in the region dumped almost two feet of snow in areas of Central New York. The ladies enjoyed a tournament kickoff banquet Wednesday night, before focusing on the task at hand Thursday.
As the 5th-seed, WGTC will take on tournament host, fourth-seeded and fifth nationally-ranked Mohawk Valley (24-7). The Hawks (24-7) advanced to the national finals by knocking off Finger Lakes (NY) 61-46 in the District A Championship. WGTC (8-16) shocked the nation by upsetting fourth-ranked Montgomery College (MD) 81-70 to claim the District G Championship.
The Golden Knights are guaranteed three games while in New York. A win Thursday at 7 p.m. will push WGTC into the semifinal round Friday 7:00 with the winner between Rock Valley (IL) and Brookdale (NJ). A loss would see WGTC face the loser of that same game Friday at 2 p.m.
