VRPD Investigating Alleged Incident Resulting In Serious Injury To Three-Year Old Boy

Villa Rica Police continue to investigate an alleged incident that resulted in serious head injuries to a three year old boy early Tuesday. The boy was life-flighted to an Atlanta hospital.

"On 01/23/18 at 10:12 AM, Villa Rica Police responded to Hickory Falls Apartments due to a report of a 3 year old child that was found injured," VRPD Captain Keith Shaddix said. "The child's mother reported the issue to 911.  During the investigation it was determined that the step father, Joshua Richards, 21 years old, from Villa Rica, was the individual that caused the injuries to the child."

Richards has so far been charged with cruelty to children, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, as well possession of marijuana, following an alleged incident involving he and his stepson.

The boy is listed in critical condition.

Richards, who is the son of Carrollton Police Chief Joel Richards, is being held at the Carroll County Jail.

Villa Rica Police Chief Michael Mansour told WLBB Radio Wednesday that the department's thoughts and prayers are with the immediate family of the injured toddler, as well as the family of their fellow officer.

Mansour said, "I have no doubt that our investigators will treat this incident as they would any other alleged crime. Chief Richards has shown nothing but respect for our duties here, as I assumed he would."
