On May 7th at 6:22 PM, Villa Rica Police responded to the corner of Cleghorn St and McCauley St due to reports of a shooting. During the investigation it was determined that Marko Xavier Burton, 36 years old, from Douglasville Ga., and Julius Walker, 31 years old, from Villa Rica had been involved in a dispute earlier in the afternoon at another location. Walker was at the Cleghorn St. location when Burton stopped his vehicle and exited with a firearm in his hand. The dispute escalated with both Burton and Walker firing shots at each other.
A bystander was struck by one of the shots fired. He was treated and released at Tanner Hospital in Villa Rica. Burton was struck by the shots fired and transported to Tanner where he was pronounced dead. Walker was not injured during this incident.
Investigators discovered that the firearm used by Burton had been reported stolen in Paulding County. Walker was found to have an active warrant for a probation violation. Walker was arrested on that charge and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
