Time Running Out For VR To Implement Senior Tax Break For 2017

Carroll County Elections officials say the city of Villa Rica has until Monday to request the call that would ensure a referendum regarding a senior citizen tax break makes it on ballots for the March 21st election.
Villa Rica city officials had hoped to have the new referendum on March ballots so that if approved, it would possibly take effect in time for the 2017 tax filing deadline.
The plan developed by Villa Rica would provide an $8,000 homestead exemption to all city taxpayers age 65 or over.
The state house passed the measure last week.
The state senate read and referred the bill this week.
If and when the senate approves the bill, it would still need to be signed by Governor Nathan Deal.
If a referendum does not make the ballots for March, it would likely be placed on ballots in November and if approved it could be implemented in time for the 2018 tax season.
