Tallapoosa Dogwood Festival Coming Next Weekend

The 33rd Annual Dogwood Festival will take over Tallapoosa’s main Street next Saturday. The festival is a great time to welcome spring and all that Tallapoosa has to offer, according to organizer, Tommy Allen, “It’s a great time to celebrate springtime. It’s a good time to bring the community together to work together and promote Tallapoosa.”

The festival features the Dogwood Parade with grand marshals Keith and Tammy Miller of Miller Funeral Home. Allen said many food vendors and local artists selling handcrafted items will also be present.

“The Dogwood Festival is strictly handcrafted artists. All of our craft vendors have handmade items. We do not allow any commercial items of any kind. We also have a lot of food vendors and activities for children.”

Money raised by the festival on April 14th benefits the Tallapoosa Historical Society. The group said funds will go toward relocating the oldest home within Haralson County, which had been in danger of being demolished.

The Tallapoosa Historical Society was tasked with raising $43,000 to move the Holcombe House. The more than 150 year-old log cabin home, located off highway 100, will be moved to Helton Howland Memorial Park. The move could finally happen later this month

“We have taken that on as a major project and we will be responsible to continue keeping the log cabin up,” said Allen.

The group hopes to open the house sometime in May and will offer tours for school groups and the general public.
