Store Owner Sentenced After Asking GBI Agent To Burn Down His Business

The former owner of a Bremen dry cleaning business is sentenced to more than two years in prison for conspiracy to commit arson.

Investigators say 44-year-old Hitendra Patel was recorded asking an undercover Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent to burn down the Economy Cleaners in June of 2012. Patel reportedly told the agent that the business wasn't profitable and he wanted it destroyed so he could use insurance money to pay the mortgage and other debts. Patel also told the agent about another property he owned in Bowdon, which Patel said he might hire the agent to burn after the Bremen arson was complete.

Officials say Patel gave the agent incendiary materials and told the agent where the key to the business was hidden.
The Bremen dry cleaning business was located in an older part of town near city hall.
This case was investigated by the ATF, GBI and the city of Bremen Fire/Rescue.
