Southwire To Pay Penalty For Water Discharge

(Carrollton, GA.) – Southwire Company announced today that it will pay a $4,000 penalty for a process and storm water discharge that occurred Jan. 30 at its Carrollton-Ga. manufacturing facilities. The discharge contained concentrations of certain metals that surpassed those allowed in a permit issued by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. “Although the metals concentrations were higher than allowed by permit, they were in compliance with drinking water standards,” said Rebecca Cranford, Southwire’s senior vice president of sustainability, safety and environmental. “We are cleaning the process and storm water system to remove any residual contamination. At the same time, we are investigating circumstances surrounding the release and putting into place more frequent sampling procedures to ensure similar discharges do not occur in the future.”
