Property Tax Sale Recoups Delinquent Taxes For Tallapoosa

Tallapoosa city officials say their initial property tax sale earlier this month was successful in helping recoup some delinquent property taxes from 2015.
City Clerk Polly Smith says as a result of anticipation of the property tax sale and then the sale that took place on September 6th, an approximate $44,000 in delinquent property taxes had been collected. That’s about 70-percent of the $64,000 dollars owed from 2015.

Smith reports that 11 properties sold and 14 properties had no bids.

City officials are quick to point out that the city did not make any additional money from the propert sales, only collecting the taxes owed. They say any excess funds are held in an account for anyone that has rights to the property to petition for the funds. After the appropriate holding period expires, any excess funds will then be turned over to the State.
