Murder Suspects Could Have First Hearing Today


Carrollton Police confirm they have recovered a body believed to be that of missing 21-year old University of West Georgia Student Marci Elliott. The body is transferred to the GBI Crime Lab awaiting positive identification. Police do have two Carrollton residents in custody whom they believe murdered Elliott. 31-year old Joshua Clay and 29-year old Farrah Strength are both in the Carroll County Jail.

Last Public Hearing & Vote On Millage Increase Expected Tonight


The Haralson County Board of education is expected to officially approve a .5% raise of the millage rate this evening. Schools Supt. Brett Stanton says, "we are exploring all other avenues as an effort to keep from cutting school programs." He says,  "the bottom line is we have had a drop in the tax digest that has cost us approximately $275,000."

City Works On New By-The-Drink Ordinance


Temple Mayor Rick Ford recommends the city "mirror the current beer and wine ordinance" when considering the new referendum that will allow restaurants to serve liquor. He says, "that should make it alot easier" for all parties affected to keep up with. Temple voters last week elected by a 33-vote margin to allow sit-down eateries to serve distilled alcohol.

Missing UWG Student


Carrollton Police are looking for a missing University Of West Georgia student last seen six days ago on Lovvorn Road. Captain James Perry says 21-year old (Marcelle) Marci Elliott disappeared just before midnight Thursday after visiting friends. Investigators have reportedly recovered Elliott's car in the same spot she had left it.

Temple Council Discusses Millage Rate


The state of Georgia reportedly recommends that Temple raise the millage rate from 7.05 mils to 7.29 mils. City Manager Kim Pope tells City Council Monday that the mil rate hike would only equal about $9,000 in extra revenue and encourages them to leave the rate at 7.05. Council could make the final decision on that as early as next Monday.

Carroll Millage Rate Unchanged; Haralson Expected To Increase

Local Coach Killed In Wreck


A two vehicle accident Wednesday evening, one mile east of Wedowee, Alabama results in the death of a Carrollton High School coach. Mayor Says More City Job Cuts Possible


Villa Rica Mayor J. Collins says he expects to see more cuts to the city's budget. Collins says administration is "ironing out the details now" but could take as much as between $150,000 and $250,000 from the bottom line. The Mayor says "it would not surprise (him) if there were more city positions cut or eliminated in the budget amendment."

Carroll County Budget Approved


Carroll County Commissioners approve the Chairman's proposed 2010/11 budget Monday, 4 to 3. District Commish Kevin Jackson made the only motion to amend the proposal but was shot down by the majority of Commissioners. Jackson's amendment included cutting funds from the NAACP, the Ag Center, E-911 and Animal Control.

System-Wide CRCT Results In; School Results Expected Next Week


The percentage of students in Bremen City Schools grades 1-8 meeting or exceeding the state standards is higher than the state's overall average in every subject tested by the CRCT exam, according to the state DOE website. Most notably, 99.3% of the city system's 1st graders, 98.7% of the 5th graders and 100% of the 8th graders meet or exceed state standards in Reading.

Burglar Takes Guns From Business


A burglar breaks into a Carrollton business and leaves with seven shotgun type weapons. Carrollton Police Captain Chris Dobbs says the thief apparently entered the offices of Dan's Metal Detector by pushing out an air conditioner unit placed in a window. Dobbs estimates the total cost of the guns at between $2,500 and $3,000.

Sheriff Eddie Mixon says 48-year old Theresa Lynn Duffey created a sympathetic story to gain "love offerings" from church members. Duffey admits to falsely claiming she needed the money to travel to Illinois where she said her son had been killed in an auto accident.

Carrollton Police Mourn Loss Of One Of Their Own


54-year old Jimmy Johnson spent but one active year with the Carrollton Police Department. After responding to a call outside of the First Tuesday Tavern November 11th, 1980, he was shot "point-blank" in his back... an injury from which he never fully recovered according to CPD Chief Joel Richards. Funeral arrangements for Johnson are being prepared today.

Two Men Accused Of Shooting & Burning Victim Caught


Police says drugs are likely behind an incident in which a man is shot and left to die Tuesday in Douglasville. Douglas County authorities have arrested 20-year old James Jordan and 22-year old Brandon Taylor in connection with the aggravated assault and armed robbery of 19-year old Javarus DuPree.
