GBI Investigating Death Of Jail Inmate

Carroll County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Brad Robinson confirms that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of a 34-year old Carroll County Jail inmate that occurred over the weekend.

Robinson Monday told WLBB radio that Clifford Cole Mintor of Bowdon was found to be "unresponsive" in his jail cell by deputies doing a routine check on inmates.

Mintor had been in police custody since Friday morning.

"Deputies had responded to a 911 call around 9:30 am Friday. The caller claimed that a male family member was making threats on a female," Robinson explained. "After deputies arrived... the suspect eventually fired at least two gun shots. He fired one shot in the direction of his wife and another gun shot in the direction of our deputy."

Mintor was taken into custody by deputies.

During Mintor's transport to the Carroll County Jail, Robinson claims that the suspect made numerous threats against officers. "He had threatened to kill them," he said.

Mintor was charged with aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault (FVA), according to the Carroll County jail website. Robinson says an additional charge of making terroristic threats was added, as well.Mintor was jailed, but did not get his initial hearing in front of a judge to determine a potential bond.

Deputies discovered an unresponsive Mintor in his cell Saturday evening. Emergency responders attempted CPR. He was rushed to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, according to reports.

Mintor was pronounced dead at Tanner at 7:30 p.m. and confirmed by Carroll County Coroner Keith Hancock.

Robinson declined to comment on questions relating to the 36-plus hours that Mintor was in custody, or Mintor's mental or physical health condition... "because this investigation is ongoing and the GBI is looking into all of that at this time."

A GBI Supervisor declined comment on Monday.

An autopsy on Mintor's body is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
