Early Morning Armed Robbery Suspect Caught; Police Believe He May Be Connected To Other Unsolved Crimes

Carrollton Police say a civilian with a gun pursued an alleged armed robber early Wednesday morning.
Both men are reportedly uninjured and one of them is now behind bars in the Carroll County Jail.
CPD Captain Shannon Cantrell says the suspect allegedly robbed the Citgo Station at 1101 Alabama Street around 3:00 this morning.
He has since been identified as 25-year old Michael Dennis Hines of Carrollton. He is reportedly employed as a janitor with the University of West Georgia.
"As our suspect was leaving the store, a Carroll County resident on his paper route, witnessed our suspect run out of the Citgo," Cantrell told WLBB Radio. "He said the male subject was wearing dark clothes and a ski mask. The 44-year old civilian was suspicious, of course. He looked inside the store and saw that the clerk was shaken up. He knew something was wrong."
It is believed that the clerk called 911 at this point. Police were en route to the scene.
Cantrell says next, the civilian returned to his vehicle and followed the vehicle driven by the alleged robber. The witness too called 911.
"Sometime after the vehicles reached Avenue C, the suspect reportedly stopped his car, leaned out of the door, and fired a weapon at the witness," Cantrell explained. "The witness-- who was armed himself-- leaned into his vehicle's passenger seat and took cover. He then exchanged gunfire with the suspect."
Investigators believe the suspect drove away from Avenue C, in the direction of Lovvorn Road. The witness followed, explaining the action to a 911 operator.
"The suspect eventually crashed his car... at the river bridge just before Rolling Hills Mobile Home Park," Cantrell said. "For a short time our witness lost sight of our suspect. When our officers arrived, the civilian flagged them down. We found the suspect's car in the ditch... and a short distance away, we found Hines under the bridge."
Cantrell says investigators located a sawed-off shotgun and .380-calibur handgun in the suspect's vehicle.
Hines faces numerous charges including three counts of aggravated assault and armed robbery.

Carrollton Police continue to investigate this incident. They suspect that Hines may have been involved in up to three other un-solved armed robbery cases that have occurred locally within the past year.
