Council & Mayor Disagree Over Using SPLOST Money For New Pavilion

Roopville city officials are asking Carroll County Commissioners to pull out $60,000 from the county’s 2013 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax collection, to pay for construction of a new 40 foot by 60 foot public use-pavilion.
City Councilwoman Robin Worley said Wednesday that the majority of council is excited about the project and they hope the county approves the request.
But not everyone in Roopville city government is pushing for the project. Mayor Bob Merrell tells WLBB Radio, “I think (a pavilion) would be a waste of money.”
Merrell says he would rather see a potential SPLOST share go toward sidewalks for the city.
“I think it will be ugly.. and we already have a pavilion at the Roop House,” he said. “If we put this money into sidewalks, everybody would benefit from that.”
Carroll County Commissioners will vote on funding the new pavilion on Tuesday.
