Contested City Council Seat in Villa Rica

Villa Rica Ga -- Qualifying for Villa Rica City Council ended earlier this week. Two out of the three seats will be running contested including Ward 5 with incumbent Councilman Danny Carter.

Carter has served two nonconsecutive terms and hopes to add a third to his resume. He wants to continue what he believes is his reputation of being friendly to property owners and businesses in the area.

Carter said: "I've always tried to reduce the millage rate because I think the property owner gets hit a little too hard in Villa Rica. I'm also on the industrial development authority and we have brought in a lot of business. We've filled up our industrial area almost to capacity."

Carter also says there are many projects that the current council has started that he would like to see through.

"We hope to complete the north bypass. Obviously it is underway and we would like to conclude that and we are looking at extending the Shoreline Parkway to downtown to bring in Mirror Lake as part of the city," said Carter.

Carter will be running against Larry Cohrs, a retired employee with the state of Georgia and a local farmer. Cohrs, a newcomer to local politics, discussed with WLBB about why he is running and what he hopes to accomplish if elected.

Cohrs said, "I have been a citizen for 25 years and I have been observing the city council for the past 23 years and I decided I needed to step up to the plate and stop being an observer and be an active participant. I hope to have a solid robust budget, make sure our roads are paved, our seniors are well taken care of and at the moment, the trash is picked up."

That city council election will be held on November 7th later this year.
